Essence is part of a complicated currency that can be used to upgrade gear pieces to get bonuses in combat in Path of Exile.

Path of Exile Essence

An essence is categorized as part of a very complicated group of currency items. These items are employed for making equipment. A part of normal rarity equipment can be improved to rare using all essences. Furthermore, essences always apply one affix. The affixes of rare equipment are also able to be reconstructed using certain essences.

Essence

Below is a complete breakdown of the Essence currency required in crafting.

Taxonomy

The name assigned to an essence is made up of three separate parts. The prefix in the name represents the essence’s level; the suffix represents the essence’s type and ‘essence’ always lies between these two. For example, the essence ‘Whispering Essence of Woe’ consists of the prefix ‘Whispering’ and suffix ‘of Woe’.

The modifiers which an essence can imbue are indicated by the type of the essence. The size of the bonuses given by the modifiers is indicated by the level of the essence.

Essence Levels

In total, there are seven essence levels, differentiated by a prefix word. By counting the lines present in the art icon of an essence, its level can be found out.

Essence Types

25 unique types of essences exist. At lower levels, some essences are unachievable. It must be noted that the corrupted essences do not have a level.

Mechanics

Obtaining Essences

In most areas, you can occasionally come in contact with monsters trapped in essence crystals. In order to free the monster, the center essence crystal needs to be activated thrice, which will break the crystal. On death, these monsters may grant the essence item. It must be kept in mind that these monsters are strengthened by special monster modifiers on the essence.

Certain types of essences are only present at higher essence levels. What this means is that there is a tiered progression. Hence, in areas with a larger monster level, more essence types become available.

In order to obtain level 6, ‘Shrieking’ essences, level 5 essences will have to be corrupted using a Remnant of Corruption or lower level essence will have to be upgraded using the vendor recipe system. The only way to obtain level 7, ‘Deafening’ essences is by using the vendor recipe system to upgrade lower level essences.

Corruption

By applying a Remnant of Corruption on an essence monster (prior to releasing it), corruption of essences can attained.

When an essence monster is corrupted, one of the following will happen:

Mobs are freed with strengthened stats.

The level of all contained essences, except for Deafening essences, shall be increased by 1 (the base essence type will not be changed).

One additional essence may be acquired by the monsters.

The essence type will be upgraded in the tiered progression. If the original is at a lower level than the minimum required for the next tier, the level of the essence can possibly be increased.

In order to obtain Essence of Insanity, Essence of Delirium, Essence of Hysteria, and Essence of Horror, monsters with an essence of tier 5 will have to be corrupted.

Crafting

In order to reconstruct the affixes of rare equipment, level 6 and 7 essences and corruption-only essences can also be used. On top of applying an affix, applying an essence this way will negate any Master’s meta-crafting modifiers.

Essence Possession Effects

Essences Possession effect
Hatred A nova of Arctic Breath projectiles is shot out.
Woe Energy Locus which casts Lightning Tendrils is summoned.
Greed A red bubble is generated around the enemy which explodes into 3 projectile. These projectiles deal Corrupted Blood on hit, similar to Malachai’s TriBomb.
Contempt Casts an ice version of Ancestral Warchief, over regular intervals of time. At ‘Screaming’, 3 spirits which seem to be an ice version of Ancestral Warchief (but without the player-chasing totem), they seem to be invincible.
Sorrow Totems which cast a Vortex where the player is, are casted..
Anger A nova of a fire version of Arctic Breath projectiles is shot out.
Torment Ball Lightning is casted where the player is, over regular intervals of time.
Fear 3 Charging Corsair is summoned, which is a unique Spectral Corsair.
Suffering Frost Bomb is casted over regular intervals of time. Afterwards, Arctic Golem is summoned on death.
Rage Fire runes are generated which are activated when they are stepped on. These runes deal fire damage, similar to Malachai’s Fire Traps.
Wrath A nova of lightning projectiles, which act similar to Molten Strike’s projectiles, are shot out.
Doubt Essence Tarantula which performs Flicker Strike and Viper Strike is summoned.
Anguish Fiery Rubble which breaks into smaller size on death is summoned.
Loathing
Spite Totems which leave patches of Shocking Ground and cast Arc are summoned.
Zeal
Misery Pulses which put a over-time chaos damage debuff on the player are shot out.
Dread A chaos version of Firestorm is casted. Guardian Golem (a unique Chaos Golem) is summoned.
Scorn
Envy A grasping hand, similar to Cold Snap, which teleports the player to location of the monster is summoned. This may be dodged by moving.
Hysteria
Insanity Storm Call is casted and invulnerable Spectral Spirits which attack the player are summoned.
Horror A chain reaction of ice explosion, similar to one of the Mutewind Leader Warband skill is summoned by monsters.
Delirium Monsters which look similar to Carrion Minion are summoned, chaos version of Flame Dash (that uses Caustic ArrowMTX’s)is casted by it.
Remnant of Corruption Enemy possesses a physical damage over time, which is unable to be leeched from. When killed, 2 Fleshmonster are summoned.
